The Founding Father of The Villages ...HAROLD SCHWARTZ -
The founding father of the community - purchased orange blossom gardens - a manufactured home park - in the early 1970’s - approximately 10 years later he convinced his son - H. Gary Morse to come to Lady Lake and help him run the business - which was the beginning of the concept we now call - “The Villages!”
The Villages was started in Lake County, which is now referred to as the Historic Section of The Villages. Today the community extends into three counties:
Lake County - with a population of 293,500 in 2010 and a projected population of 328,400 by the year 2015.
Marion County - with a population of 330,600 in 2010 and a projected population of 360700 by the year 2015.
Sumter County - with a population of 99,400 in 2010 and a projected population of 119,100 by the year 2015.
The Villages’ population in January of 2010 was approximately 77,000 and has
a proposed population of 105,000 residents by the year 2017.

Of the Total of emergency calls 78% were for medical emergencies, 2% were for fire/EMS calls, and the remaining 20% were miscellaneous calls.
Golf Carts - Major Means of Transportation Not surprising, due to the fact that nearly all areas in the community are golf-cart accessible - 80% of all resident trips inside The Villages are done by golf cart. It is estimated that 40,000 golf carts are operating on the 87 miles of trails located throughout The Villages. There are also 34 round-abouts found on the roads of the community.
